Michael K. Slack
Golf Course Superintendent
About Me
I am the Superintendent at Island Country Club on Marco Island, Florida. Island Country Club is the only private championship golf course on the barrier island. It is known for its member-first attitude and outstanding facilities, including tennis, a fitness center, and culinary options. As a result of the golf course itself and the clubs’ amenities, it attracts some high clientele from across the nation. At Island Country Club, I have applied my education and training to provide exceptional playing conditions with an expanding staff of 21 employees and expanded the operating budget from $1.7 million to $2.4 million. On top of maintaining distinctive playing surfaces, my time at Island Country Club has taught me that open communication with the general manager, club members, and the Director of Golf is the only successful way to operate effectively.
During my 25-year tenure in the turf industry, I have been a critical individual in the mentoring and training of two assistants who have transitioned to the role of Superintendents within the Tampa Bay area. I have had the opportunity to play vital roles in the preparation and execution of 12 PGA Tour events, 1 PGA Championship, 1 US Amateur, and 1 US Women’s Mid-Amateur. These experiences not only broadened my knowledge and instilled a strong sense of confidence but also hatched lifelong connections with other Superintendents throughout the United States.
